In this class, we focused on the effects of advertising and its methods of manipulation by analyzing a promotional IKEA video and discussing how we can implement these tactics for the overall amelioration of TGUISS'S image. Watching the IKEA advertisement has made me realize how easy it is for people to be fooled by a screen cleverly constructing its mise-en-scene based on predicting emotional responses, and that one of those people was indeed me who exceptionally fell into the hands of the video's creators in which I had immediately caught feelings of solace towards the vulnerable and shameful looking abandoned lamp, only to be taunted by the on-screen cast about people's absurd tendencies of sympathizing over inanimate and soulless objects. And the thing is, this video wasn't the only time when pathos was deliberately over-used to gain attraction. In fact, the IKEA video itself was rather transparent in its techniques, and was apparent through the analysis that we conducted subsequent to our first watching, where we noticed the music, acting, weather, and color all contributed to creating a sentimental atmosphere. The fact that people can still be oblivious about whether they're being influenced by despite the repetitive nature of these manipulative media shows that just recognition isn't enough to cultivate a mindset that doesn't waver from ominous BGM.

This is why I believe it's important to experience both sides of the story, in order to acknowledge just how well media can be fabricated to pull off an idealistic look that is impactful to the audience. When we discussed ways to promote our school through a video shoot, a lot of ideas included picking the specific actors who match the student principles as well as secluding locations that may imply a discrepancy in the school, all similarily characteristic of faking social output and hiding reality. Not only does this activity help students understand the grand scheme of how good manipulation is decided and is what decides its success, but it may go as far as to say that by choosing "video" as a choice of production, we are able to get away with luring people into biased thinking, therefore we can notice that to determine the reliability of a context, the type of media is key as it can reveal a lot about the creator's incentives.

With that in mind, looking back at our PR document, we can see that our type of media in this case was a document that doesn't allow for much sentimentality compared to the IKEA video. However, it does allow me to express myself through persuasive writing. Therefore, I can conclude that to improve my PR document, I should take a more professional approach that isn't over-exaggerating in words as it would make it harder for audiences to imagine my traits.
